Last night I got the call I've been hoping for from the general manager of Plum TV.  With less than 24 hours notice, JR and Ali from the talented Plum TV production crew arrived at my front door to begin filming, "A Day in the Life of Lori McNee Artist".  Thank goodness I overhauled and cleaned my studio this past weekend!   Plum TV is the first and only 24-hour lifestyle network that targets the most active, influential, and educated audience … [Read more...]

baldy mt

Although winter is almost over, I want to share this little video I made while plein air painting out on a beautiful day last month in February - and who knows, maybe you'll get out there before all that snow melts! Painting outside always has its challenges and it is good to know some basic outdoor survival skills, but winter plein air painting can be a bit tricky. Nevertheless, it is well worth the effort to get out of the studio and into the … [Read more...]

Each summer I have the priveledge of plein air painting alongside a talented group of Nationally recognized artists during a week long event hosted by Kneeland Gallery of Sun Valley, Idaho. Being an artist consists of many isolated hours alone in our studios or painting out in the field, so this is a special time for us all. … [Read more...]

A Brush with Danger – Plein Air Painting in the Back-Country

High Country Cattle 30x40 72dpi

During the summer months here in Idaho, I spend a lot of time exploring and plein air painting in the mountains. Plein Air painting is the French term which literally means, ‘painting in the open air’. Just like the Impressionists, artists venture out from the comfort of their studios and into the field in order to study the effects of light on a subject. But painting pretty pictures in the back-country isn’t as easy as it looks. It takes … [Read more...]

High Country Cattle 30x40 oil/canvas $5500 available at Kneeland Gallery  High Country Cattle was partially painted outside in the wild backcountry of the Big Lost Mountains in Idaho. Painting pretty pictures in the great out-of-doors is not just another walk-in-the-park. In fact, plein air painting is tough work. It takes us from the controlled environment of our studio and into the unpredictable environment of Mother Nature. Outdoor painting with a pochade box is a wonderful experience, but believe it or not, there are some hazards the artist should be aware of and prepared for when painting outside. The most effective way … [Read more...]

My Paintings of Provence

Provence, France  has fascinated landscape painters for ages. Artists have been painting in Provence since prehistoric times.  Paintings of bison, seals, penguins and horses dating to between 27,000 and 19,000 b.c. were found in the Cosquer Cave near Marseilles.  From the 1300's up through the 1700's, Provincial rich art history consisted of biblical art, fantastic animals and scenes of daily life.  My daughter and I saw many of these paintings … [Read more...]

Painting & Playing in Provence

Awww...Paris. Rich in history dating  back more than two millenia, Paris has attractions sufficient to last a lifetime. But for me - the deep blue of a Provincial sky, the aroma of fresh baked bread and lavender fields floating on warm breezes beckoned me into the French countryside.   My daughter and I were fortunate enough to organize a painting trip with a wonderful group of ladies. After many years of studying the French Impressionists, … [Read more...]

Build a Pochade Box!

pochade-storage

POCHADE BOXES are a compact, portable painting studio in a box which work especially well for the landscape artist.  I made this one myself and I will show you how.  But first a bit of history…  The word, “pochade” is French which means a quick color sketch.  Originally, the painters from the 18th and 19th century had to lug big heavy French easels into the field.   Pochade boxes have made painting out-of-doors or ‘en … [Read more...]
